AREX Express vs all-stop train: which should you take?
Choose the airport train by comparing the complete trip to your accommodation—not only the fastest-looking service name. The Express has reserved seats and limited stops; the all-stop train costs less and can remove a transfer when your destination is on its route.

Your destination is near Hongik University, Gongdeok or another intermediate station, or minimizing ticket cost matters more than reserved seating.
The answer can change for the return trip. A hotel near Seoul Station may favor a different option from accommodation near Hongdae, even for the same travelers.

The premium is calculated from the two current canonical fares for the same terminal. It is not a hidden estimate. Multiply that premium by the number of supported adult travelers, then decide whether the different service is worth that group total.

The official terms define the Express as a reserved-seat train stopping only at Seoul Station and the two airport terminals. They define the all-stop service as unreserved and stopping at every station. Those structural differences are more reliable than a marketing label.
Why the cheapest ticket can lose
Ticket price is only one component. Add the cost and friction of the final leg. An all-stop passenger going directly to Hongdae may finish with no rail transfer; an Express passenger would first reach Seoul Station and then travel back toward the accommodation. The reverse can be true for a traveler staying beside Seoul Station.
Complete cost = airport ticket + onward paid transport
Usability check = valid departure + transfers + walking + luggage difficulty
Do not convert comfort into an invented monetary value. First identify all valid options and the cheapest complete cost. Then use reserved seating, transfers, walking and schedule risk as explicit recommendation factors within a configured near-optimal set.
Four checks before you buy
- Confirm your terminal. Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 have different verified fares.
- Check the current timetable. A fare comparison does not prove that a train runs at your arrival time.
- Use your hotel as the endpoint. “Airport to Seoul” is not a complete route.
- Price every traveler honestly. Do not apply an adult comparison to an unverified child category.

Does the AREX Express stop at Hongdae?
No. The official stop definition includes Seoul Station and the two airport terminals. Use the all-stop train when Hongik University Station is the useful rail destination.
Is the Express automatically better with luggage?
No. Reserved seating may improve comfort, but an extra transfer and longer final walk can offset that benefit. Compare the whole route from terminal to accommodation.
