Seoul Climate Card vs T-money: which costs less?

T-money charges for the journeys you use. A short-term Climate Card charges a fixed amount for a defined window and service area. Compare the same planned rides, then pay separately for every excluded journey.

Current base-fare break-even comparison

Climate Card prices and first strictly cheaper ride counts compared with the verified adult Seoul transit base fare
Pass Pass price If card already owned If buying a new physical card
Climate Card 1-day Pass1-day window ₩5,000 Cheaper from base-fare ride 4 Cheaper from base-fare ride 6
Climate Card 2-day Pass2-day window ₩8,000 Cheaper from base-fare ride 6 Cheaper from base-fare ride 8
Climate Card 3-day Pass3-day window ₩10,000 Cheaper from base-fare ride 7 Cheaper from base-fare ride 9
Climate Card 5-day Pass5-day window ₩15,000 Cheaper from base-fare ride 10 Cheaper from base-fare ride 12
Climate Card 7-day Pass7-day window ₩20,000 Cheaper from base-fare ride 13 Cheaper from base-fare ride 15

Comparison basis: verified adult base fare ₩1,550; base fare checked 13 Aug 2026. A new physical Climate Card adds ₩3,000 once.

“Cheaper from ride” means the first count where the fixed pass total is strictly lower than repeating the displayed base fare. It is not a promise for every station pair: distance supplements and transfer discounts can change the T-money total. Longer journeys can have a distance surcharge.

The 60-second decision

T-money usually fits

  • Light sightseeing days with relatively few paid rides.
  • Trips that frequently leave the Climate Card service area.
  • Travelers who value nationwide reuse over one Seoul pass window.

Climate Card can fit

  • Dense Seoul days with enough eligible rides to cross the verified threshold.
  • A plan contained inside one available pass window.
  • Travelers who understand and avoid the excluded-service trap.

Coverage matters as much as ride count

Count as eligible

  • Seoul-licensed buses
  • Subway journeys within the published Climate Card service range

Pay separately

  • Airport and intercity buses
  • Sinbundang Line
  • Subway journeys outside the published service range

Check the current official Climate Card coverage and official Seoul subway fare page before purchase.

How to compare your trip correctly

  1. List each Seoul day and the rides you genuinely plan to take.
  2. Separate eligible rides from airport, intercity and other excluded transport.
  3. Compare T-money for the same rides with every active pass window.
  4. Add a physical-card cost only when the traveler needs to buy one.
  5. Choose the cheapest complete strategy; do not assign value to unused unlimited rides.

The calculator performs that comparison for your dates and keeps excluded rides in the total. For the wider trip, use the Korea budget baseline guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Seoul Climate Card always cheaper than T-money?

No. T-money remains cheaper when the complete pay-as-you-go total for planned eligible rides is below the pass price plus any required physical-card cost.

Does the Climate Card cover airport transport?

Airport and intercity services can be outside the verified service scope. Classify those rides as excluded and pay for them separately.

Should I include the physical Climate Card cost?

Yes when a traveler needs a new physical card. If the traveler already owns a reusable compatible card, compare without buying it again.

Why is the ride threshold only an estimate?

Seoul pay-as-you-go fares can depend on distance and transfer rules. The threshold uses the displayed verified base-fare assumption; the calculator can model excluded rides separately.
