What matters on this route
The rail fare ends at Gangneung Station. A coastal stop, resort or outlying café is not automatically walkable from the rail station, so add the final connection as local transport rather than folding it into the train ticket.
Choose the beach before choosing the return train
“A beach day in Gangneung” is not yet a route. Pick the actual coastal stop, search the connection from Gangneung Station, and repeat the search in reverse for the afternoon. Two places described as Gangneung can require different local journeys. Changing beaches after booking a tight return can remove the time you thought you had at the coast.
Use a bad-weather version of the same plan
Keep one indoor alternative near your chosen area and avoid committing to several widely separated stops. Compare the day trip with an overnight only after adding the local transport and room cost. An overnight may give flexibility, but it also uses a later return date in the pass calculation; the same-day example below does not price that stay.
For a useful time budget, subtract both local connections and your station buffer from the time between arriving and leaving by train. If the result is too short for the beach visit you want, reduce the stop list or change the overnight decision, rather than assuming a taxi will always rescue the schedule.
