Train travel in Korea: the practical basics

Start with the exact station, train and date. High-speed booking changed on 1 September 2026, while slower regional services, pass eligibility and station access still need their own checks.

Know your trains

KTX / KTX-Sancheon are high-speed service labels shown in official search results. ITX-Saemaeul, Mugunghwa and other services can use different stops and journey times. Do not choose from the train name alone: compare the exact origin, destination, departure time, ticket conditions and current operator listing.

Buying tickets

Use the current official KORAIL booking site or station channel. The foreign-language page is the correct place to begin an online booking, but individual payment approval and ticket issuance still need confirmation. Check the issued ticket for date, station, train and seat details. Do not treat a card notification or search result as the ticket itself.

Traveling with luggage

KORAIL publishes a two-piece carry-on limit and requires passengers to carry their own bags without occupying a seat or blocking the aisle. Large lithium-battery rules also changed in July 2026. Use the current KTX luggage guide instead of relying on an unofficial universal suitcase measurement.

Use the step-by-step KTX booking guide to choose the correct station and official sales channel before paying.

Rail passes in one paragraph

A current KORAIL Pass may cover eligible trains on selected travel days under its published conditions. It can cost less or more than tickets on either a multi-city plan or a return trip; the break-even depends on your exact plan, which is why we built the calculator that tests every option. The full rules live in the KORAIL Pass guide, and the pass-versus-tickets guide shows the exact comparison formula and current verified examples.

A station-to-station checklist

  1. Search the official timetable for the actual date and both exact stations.
  2. Check the service shown in the result; do not transfer an old operator assumption to it.
  3. Price each traveler and each direction. Add separate local transport beyond both stations.
  4. Review baggage, change and refund rules on the issuing channel before payment.
  5. After issuance, keep the official ticket or retrieval method accessible and verify every field.

Holiday sale procedures and booking windows can differ from an ordinary day. Follow the current notice for the date you need; this guide does not claim that a seat becomes available a fixed number of weeks in advance. If one station has no useful result, check whether the route uses another station, but never substitute a nearby station without pricing the complete local journey.

Verified route fare guides

For the trip beyond the fare, use the Gangneung day-trip or overnight guide.
